What is a Fab Lab?
A Fab Lab (short for fabrication laboratory) is a space open to the public where all kinds of machine tools are available for designing and creating objects.
Fab Labs are for students, researchers, and the general public who want to express their creativity and move more quickly from the concept phase to the prototyping phase, or repair broken objects themselves.
They are the spaces for meeting and collaborative creation of tomorrow, disseminating research results and innovations around the world.
Launch of the project “Supporing Fab Labs in Niger”
The project, launched in November 2025, involved sponsoring two students from Abdou Moumouni University to participate in MakeAfrica 2025 in Cotonou.
This was Niger’s first participation in these meetings!
The second initiative was the conference “Digital Technology at the Service of Creativity,” held at the Institute for Research on Mathematics Education at the University of Niamey on March 23, 2026. It was attended by dozens of people, including students from Niamey and Dosso, university faculty and researchers, and members of the RAEDD (Research Network for Digital Education and Development). The conference was led by Amadou Souley Adamou, Fablab manager, head of Digital Fabrication, inclusion officer, and disability liaison at the University of Brest, as well as a member of the AECIN (Association of Independent Scientists of Niger) board, and Gildas Wendpanga Guiella, head of WakatLab in Burkina Faso.
The project to support Fablabs in Niger is entirely funded by AECIN’s own resources.
