From the Niger River to the Vilaine: Our Rivers Resonate with Each Other

The Niger-Brittany Cultural Day 2026, jointly organized by AECIN and the Café Associatif des Gallets, will take place on June 13, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 10:30 PM at the Ferme des Gallets, 26 Avenue Pierre Donzelot, 35700 Rennes (Bus C2 (Donzelot stop) or a 9-minute walk from the Beaulieu Metro station (Line B)).

Program of the Day

  • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Roundtable: Self-development of the Nigerien people: the role of the diaspora, international solidarity associations, and associations in Niger
  • 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM: African cuisine
  • 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM: Screening of the film African Apocalypse,, discussion - 3:30 PM: Screening of two short videos presenting Aïcha’s performance Koraou – “N’dan Gata,” a choreographic solo that seeks to communicate an intimate suffering and that of an entire people; it is a cry… a cathartic way to expel complaint and pain, to ward off evil and call for a struggle that unites and liberates.

GANGAMix “From the Sahel to Brittany”- Pierre-Yves Prothais & Pierre-Yves Dubois, calabash, ngurumi, kalangu, drums
In Hausa, “Ganga” refers to the large family of drums from Niger.
At the age of 23 in Goudoumaria, a village in the east of the country, that Pierre-Yves Prothais began to take an interest in and immerse himself in the music and instruments of this sub-Saharan nation. Later, in Rennes, he pursued a rich musical career playing world jazz, traditional music, songs, and performing in numerous film concerts.
“From the Sahel to Brittany” is a concert-narrative paying tribute to Nigerien culture and the many musicians who have inspired him. You will discover the calabash, the talking drum “ganga,” and the ngurumi, through compositions retracing the highlights of his musical adventures, notably with the music of the Gallo region by Ôbrée Alie, the Afro-jazz of Makida Palabre, and the latest compositions from the group GANGAMix, which draw inspiration from traditional dances from here and elsewhere.

En haoussa « Ganga » désigne la grande famille des tambours du Niger.
C’est à 23 ans à Goudoumaria, village à l’est du pays, que Pierre-Yves Prothais commence à s’intéresser et s’imprégner des musiques et des instruments de ce pays subsaharien. Puis à Rennes, il suit une carrière musicale riche jouant de la world jazz, des musiques trad, de la chanson et de nombreux ciné-concerts.
Du Sahel à la Bretagne est un concert-récit hommage à la culture nigérienne et de nombreux musiciens qui ont nourrit son inspiration. Vous découvrirez la calebasse, le tambour parleur « ganga », le -ngurumi-, sur des compositions retraçant les moments forts de ses aventures musicales notamment avec la musique du pays gallo d’Ôbrée Alie, l’afro-jazz de Makida Palabre et les nouvelles et dernières compositions du groupe GANGAMix qui trouvent inspiration dans les danses traditionnelles d’ici et d’ailleurs.
